Review Recompense

"Recompense (Book 2): A King's Reckoning" is a real page-turner, a thrilling ride through an alternate history of Scotland that left me both entertained and slightly wanting more. Jay Anderson expertly crafts a world where the Jacobite cause triumphed at Culloden, leaving King Charles III on the Scottish throne, but facing the looming threat of a vengeful King George II. The historical backdrop is rich and meticulously detailed; Anderson clearly did his homework, making the setting feel vibrant and believable. You can practically smell the smoke from the newly established factories churning out weapons, feel the tension in the air as Scotland prepares for inevitable war.

The plot itself is a classic underdog story – a nation fighting for its survival against a seemingly overwhelming foe. We follow Major Derek McAndrew, Captain Connor McAndrew, and Sergeant Major Ian McKenzie as they grapple with the immense task of modernizing Scotland's army, a fascinating blend of 18th-century grit and 21st-century technology. This contrast is a key strength of the book, offering a unique and engaging premise. The Strikers, with their anachronistic weaponry, are a compelling element, constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible within the narrative.

However, while the action sequences are exciting and the political intrigue keeps you guessing, the overall plot sometimes veers into predictable territory. Certain twists, while well-executed, felt a bit too easily foreseen. This isn't to say the book is boring—far from it! The sheer pace and the constant sense of impending doom keep you hooked. The characters are mostly well-developed, though I wished for a little more depth in some of the supporting players, particularly regarding their motivations and internal conflicts. The mystery surrounding Lord John Stuart and Zephyr adds another layer of suspense, but their roles, while intriguing, didn't fully satisfy my curiosity until the end.

One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its ability to blend historical accuracy with imaginative storytelling. The author's passion for the subject matter is palpable, making even the more technical aspects of military strategy engaging. It's a testament to Anderson's skill that he manages to balance intricate historical details with a fast-paced, action-packed plot that never loses sight of its central characters. The ending, while satisfying in its resolution of the immediate conflict, leaves just enough ambiguity to hint at further adventures, which is a welcome prospect.

Overall, "A King's Reckoning" is a highly enjoyable historical fiction novel. It’s a solid read, especially for fans of military fiction and alternative history. While it may not break new ground in terms of originality, its strong pacing, well-researched historical setting, and compelling central conflict make it a worthwhile and entertaining experience. The book certainly makes you think about what could have been, what might have happened if history had unfolded differently. It's a testament to the power of "what if" scenarios and a great addition to the genre.
